May update: when things don’t go according to plan
This month’s clinic update is in the spirit of rolling with the hitches, sharing a slice of life beyond the Instagramable moments.
The past month has been full of many exquisite moments but not everything went according to plan.
I’ve just returned from a family holiday with my sister and elderly father. At his advanced age, dad admitted it would be his last trip to Europe and we were determined to make it memorable.
There were some golden days in Lisbon, a Michelin starred restaurant in Bordeaux and the awesome Guggenheim museum in Bilbao.
But there were also a few hitches with weather, rough seas (on our small boat cruise) and each one of us experienced at least one unexpected health event. Remarkably the 92 year old was the only member of the family to escape the severe seasickness.
Unfortunately, his turn came on the way home to New Zealand, when he was diagnosed with pneumonia and spent a week in hospital in Singapore.
We can’t control events but we can choose our reactions
Life doesn’t always go to plan. But it’s our reactions to the unexpected, that ultimately shapes our experience. With age, I’m learning to roll with unforeseen events and not waste energy rallying against things beyond my control.
Despite the hiccoughs, the trip was peppered with precious moments. Beyond the extraordinary sights, there were many unexpected pleasures, including discovering a simple and delicious drink to make next summer.

Lurgies are doing the round, I know I sound like a broken record but don’t forget regular hand washing with soap and water greatly reduces your chance of picking up bugs. If you are unwell, stay home from work whenever possible, to reduce spreading your illness with colleagues and others on public transport etc.
Need some help to improve your immunity or recover from a bug? I’m back in the clinic and here to help you through the unexpected in life, health or business.
