Book review: Shoot the Damn Dog
Sally Brampton Shoot the Damn Dog

A memoir of depression may not be the easiest read but Sally Brompton’s writing is an eloquent telling of her truth. Whether you’re personally acquainted with “the black dog” or know someone who is, this book is both challenging and compelling but you know there willl be a positive ending. If it all gets too much skip to chapter 22 where her gradual improvement begins and continues through the various programs, treatments and philosophies that encompass her recovery.
While the telling of the memoir is the star, as a naturopath I’m always interested to read what natural remedies work for an individual. Sally’s research and experience demonstrates the benefit of supplementing with medicinal doses of EPA/fish oils, B12 and a B complex. Though these are only a small part of her overall regime. The memoir includes comprehensive notes, helpful reading and a useful index.
I finished reading Shoot the Damn Dog with a sense of peace and optimism. It really is worth the ride, harrowing as it can be at times.
