Have you noticed a bounce in your step? As the days get longer melatonin (the sleepy hormone) dials down causing a boost in energy. This might manifest as a rush of motivation, or feeling more social or impulsive. Or an urge to declutter or rock a new haircut.

Important news: TGA safety review of turmeric supplements
The Therapeutic Goods Administration recently released a consultation review into a couple of “low-negligible risk” herbs including turmeric, due to concerns of possible liver injury in rare cases.
In the handful of adverse events, these herbs are the probable but not definitive cause. The majority of potential adverse reaction reports for a range of products containing curcumin/turmeric concern older people often on multiple medications. Though the youngest concerns a 21 yo .
The TGA is not proposing to ban these herbs, rather in future curcumin containing products will likely include new labelling requirements. It’s important that practitioner- only products are reviewed regularly by the clinician who prescribed them and you keep them up to date regarding your current medication and health concerns.
If you take supplements containing turmeric/curcumin, please read this articleand if you have any concerns please get in touch.
Spring essentials
In Eastern Australia spring has sprung. Flowers are blooming and crazy weather patterns have arrived. (Hello hail storms and 25c nights!)
If your hay fever has returned, you might find it comes in two distinct phases. This depends on whether you’re allergic to the flowering trees of early spring or the later round of pollens or grasses.
Either way it’s timely for a little liver love, so break out the lemon juice in warm water to start the day and these other simple ways to transition through spring more easily.

On the upside, there are many traditions and rituals associated with spring. In the pagan calendar, the equinox is considered the ‘true’ start to the season. This year it falls on 23 September. Here are some ideas on how to celebrate the spring equinox.
Okonomiyaki waffle recipe
The latest social media craze inspired me to dig out my old stovetop waffle maker, to explore some savoury options. Other than cooking surprisingly quick hash browns, it turns out Japanese pancakes make great waffles as well.
You can cook this recipe in the traditional way in a pan but the waffles make a veggie-rich and speedy meal or snack.

On a personal note
I recently enjoyed a short holiday in Malaysia to celebrate a significant birthday. This feels like an important milestone, as it’s almost 10 years since I was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Surviving a decade without recurrence is cause for celebration!
Having sat with mortality, it’s given me a different perspective on getting older. Instead of grumbling about aging, I’m embracing it. Aging is a privilege, for which I’m incredibly grateful for.
