April update
According to the Greek legend, autumn beings when Persephone returns to the underworld. Heartbroken her mother Demeter, goddess of the harvest, allows the crops to die until Persephone returns to her in spring.
As beautiful as golden leaves and the autumnal light are, this time of year has long been associated with a cyclic return to darkness. Our energy and moods are prone to descend, and as the weather cools we can become less active and more contemplative.
But modern life can sometimes throw these traditional patterns out of rhythm. My year so far has had more twists and turns than I expected, though paradoxically it now feels more like a return to the light rather than darkness. Like many others in Sydney my car was unexpectedly written off due to minor hailstorm damage. We’ve been informed that a major road tunnel will be built just metres under our house. My father received a serious health diagnosis. Beyond the clinic, my workload has been more demanding than anticipated.
But despite the hassles and worrying, happiness and hope have triumphed. I love my new car, my dad is responding well to treatment, the neighbourhood is united and a restorative vacation is not far away. I love our innate human resilience!
When I look into my future I see fun and adventure on the family holiday, another successful practitioner retreat and continuing to inhabit the work I love as a naturopath and mentor. Do you define yourself by the past or the future? If you’re in a rut, dive into the person I’m becoming exercise. You might surprise yourself with who you really want to be.
From the garden and the markets, I’m eating feijoas fresh from the tree, leafy greens and baked root vegetables. I’m loving eggs as the perfect protein hit, in salads, savoury bakes and cooked breakfasts. Want to start the day with a scramble with a twist? Check out this month’s recipe for scrambled eggs like no other. Take a guess at what the mystery ingredient is.
I will be away from the last week of April until mid-May but there are still some naturopathy and mentoring consultations available until ANZAC Day. Autumn is such a crucial time for both health and business. Don’t wait ’til yours takes a dive to get some help.
I hope you have a restorative month, doing whatever you deeply desire.
