Keep cool during a heatwave
Living and working through a heatwave is a familiar part of the Australian summer. We can’t all be at the beach, so when stuck at home without air conditioning you tend to become inventive.
My favourite hacks to keep cool during a heatwave
On hot days I love…
A good ceiling fan, creating an artificial breeze
Wearing a sarong (maybe not while I’m on Zoom!)
Dipping my feet into a bucket of cool water
Sucking homemade savoury or fruity ice blocks (icy poles)
Long cool showers before bed
Early morning walks
Drinking
Chilled fizzy water with:
a few slices or cucumber
a small handful of frozen raspberries
cooling peppermint leaves
Finishing the day with an zero alcohol beer
Eating
Big salads with lots of leafy greens, tomatoes, cucumbers, kohlrabi and big chunks of smoked fish or boiled eggs
Sushi rice with nori, furikake, soused bonito flakes and pickles
Fresh fruit and coconut yoghurt

Don’t forget to put a bowl of water out for the birds and keep your own pets cool and hydrated.
