A comment on “natural hormones”
If you listened to the show on 3RRR today you may still have been tuned in to hear a later guest discuss “natural hormones”.
As a naturopath I have some very mixed feelings about so-called natural hormones, otherwise known as bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT). I object to the doctor saying repeatedly these are “old fashioned medicine” and totally safe. You can read my concerns about BHRT in this previous article.
On a slightly different tangent I’m fascinated about the other ways this medicine is sold women. “You might feel irritable or anxious and not feeling like sex with your husband”, the doctor commented. While sexuality is a very important issue, the idea that there’s a wonder drug that takes away any simmering underlying resentments in a relationship, to be ready and available for sex is an interesting concept. A note to all partners of menopausal or pre-menstrual women (confirmed by a informal but wide survey of clients and friends):
Women find their partner doing the housework unasked – sexy!
Women find taking care of the kids without being asked sexy!
Women find being greeted at the door with a genuine hug and being asked “how was your day” sexy!
Women find putting the toilet seat down after use sexy!
Yes “hormones” or the lack of them can put us off sex but covering over our niggles and anxieties is not the only solution.
