How I mentor practitioners
What will you get out of 1:1 mentoring and professional supervision?
While each of us has different needs, through ongoing mentoring I commit to:
-
- LISTEN to what your individual needs are
- GROW the unique clinical and business skills your require to build an authentic business
- BUILD your resilience – personally and professionally
- TROUBLESHOOT your issues, provide support and practical solutions
Holistic, individual and practical mentoring
Your aim may be to get more clients through your (digital or clinic) door but that’s only part of the process. You need to attract the clients you truly want to work with, keep them returning as long as they need to and have the skills required to transform their health.
Many clinicians fail to thrive due to inadequate business skills, clinical competence, confidence or self-care. All four aspects are vital to create an authentic business you love.
A satisfied client is your best referrer. They are your biggest fans and will share their story with EVERYONE. The opposite is also true, so knowing how to set a new client’s expectations and follow through with them, can be the difference between compliance and dissatisfaction.
Business mentoring
Generic marketing advice is just that! Your business is unique, so it requires an individual solution. It takes an insider to really understand the nuances of running a naturopathic or allied health business. Practitioners need to mine what makes them different. Then have the confidence (perhaps with some expert guidance) to walk their own path.
The standard business advice you got at uni or form online gurus mightn’t work for you. Why? Because most emerging practitioners need experience before they can identify a niche they’re happy with for the long term, or develop a clinical ‘specialty’.
Perhaps you’ve done all the online courses or signed away big bucks to the digital gurus. If their formulas left you cold or don’t work, despite diligently follow through – you’ll wish you’d booked an exploratory session with me first.
What’s truly important is to find an authentic way to share your story and work in alignment with your values, so the clients you want to attract will find you.
I began mentoring emerging practitioners in 1998, that’s more than 25 years of helping practitioners blossom. It gives me a thrill to empower so many generations of health professionals.
I also believe it’s important for me to be a credible mentor, to remain at the clinical coalface. While I’ve moved on from running my successful mulit-disciplinary clinic in Melbourne after 23 years, I love my new groove in the online space I’ve created.
Whether you’re an emerging practitioner or have been in the profession for decades, my individualised, no bullshit approach can help you create or reshape a sustainable and enjoyable business.
Professional supervision
It’s one thing to have the marketing skills required to attract your ideal clients but we also have to deliver the goods. Retaining clients and coaxing them to wellness, is even more important.
Supervision falls under the umbrella of mentoring. It can include case reviews but when combined with reflective practice it can exponentially grow your confidence and deepen your clinical awareness.
I love supporting practitioners broaden their skills and hone their craft, to be the best practitioner possible.
Confidence is the X Factor in growing a successful practice
It can be overwhelming establishing yourself as a practitioner. The key to being an effective health professional is to deliver treatment plans that are effective and easy for your client to follow.
Always working after hours? Spending too much time researching your treatment plans?
Under-confident clinicians often end up over-thinking their therapeutic approach, which can result in poor patient compliance.
Being supported by an experienced and savvy practitioner, is the smartest way to grow your clinical confidence. In addition to business mentoring, I help naturopaths, nutritionists and herbalists expand clinical skills such as:
-
- setting client expectations
- patient management
- identify gaps in clinical knowledge
- clinical competence
- efficient use of time
- effective prescribing
- managing treatment plans
- establishing boundaries
- case reviews
Client satisfaction is part competent patient management, part skillful clinical advise.
Overcoming isolation in practice
Professional supervision and mentoring helps dispel some of the isolation that many solo practitioners experience. When you make a commitment to ongoing mentoring (and are currently in clinical practice) you can also access Gill’s private Facebook mentoring group and connect with other like minded practitioners.
You asked me ‘who is my tribe?’ this is the question, as a Herbalist
professionally I need to address the isolation that has been part of
it for me for so long. I need to know I have support to make this
possibility a reality and sustainable, from friends and colleagues.
Cathy, Herbalist
