Naturopathy can often seem like the domain of women. In fact most practitioners are female. We have a tendency to feminize our clinics with gentle music, magazines and scent the air with fragrant oils. Not that some blokes don’t like that too!
In 25 years of working with people of all ages and genders, men are among my best clients. The therapeutic relationship is usually uncomplicated. Once I’ve proved my worth, men tend to take the advice and follow it. No second guessing, just straightforward problem solving.
But the biggest issue for many men is recognising when they need help.
Fortunately working online makes consultations even easier. It sidesteps parking hassles and takes less time out of the day.
Recently I received a delightful thank you from a client I’ve worked with over a series of consultations in both my Melbourne clinic and online interstate. He’s about to take an overseas posting and said, “You’ll be the first person I contact if I’m falling off the wagon, so to speak…”
Evan wanted me to share his testimonial in the hope it encourages more men to seek help when they need it. Unfortunately, despite naturopathy being a non-registered health profession in Australia, our professional associations suggest we no longer publicly share feedback from clients. So this post has been updated with his delightful encouragement removed.
But the message remains the same. If you’re a man and don’t feel well, got a niggling pain or something doesn’t feel quite right – get help. Studies show men are more reluctant, than women, in seeking health care and it’s putting them at risk.
You only get one shot at life, make it a long and happy one!
