I’ve been talking a lot about meditation lately. That may be because I’m heading off on retreat later this month to study mindfulness. Stay tuned for more about that in September’s newsletter.
But you don’t need to go off shore to begin or kickstart your meditation practice. The Melbourne Buddhist centre now offers “drop in” classes three times a week in Brunswick. I came across the Friends of the Western Buddhist Order (FWBO), now the Triratna Buddhist Community, in London in the mid-80’s. They teach two simple and effective meditation practices – the Mindfulness of Breathing and the Metta Bhavana. There’s no mysticism or special mantra’s involved and while it’s relatively easy to learn, it’s all about the “practice”.
I like the idea of the drop in classes. For $15 you’ll get a taste of what meditation can offer, without any dogma. For more information see the Melbourne Buddhist Centre website or call (03) 9380 4303.
